Since Covid, like most people, I have spent more time working at home. In fact, I almost exclusively work at home now. Everything is right there, exactly where I want it… my cup of tea, my favourite joggers, lots of natural light. I’m comfortable in my workspace as it is exactly how I want it to be, and when I come back to it the next day, everything is still there.
However, when I go back to an office – and it can be any office, I don’t feel well. Physically that is. It’s not that the offices are not nice, some are wonderful and very well equipped. It’s just that I don’t ‘feel’ right when I’m in them.
The lights are too artificially bright. There is a faint hum of monitors and fans cooling them down. And there is something else. Something that can’t be seen with the eyes.
In April 2020 I was on one of my exercise outings as part of the Covid lockdown. It was a cold sunny day in North London, and I went for a walk around my favourite park. I sat down on a bench to take in the fresh air, and noticed a man walking around barefoot, holding his shoes in his hand. It had rained the night before, so it was pretty muddy out there. But I had this overwhelming urge to copy him. I took off my shoes and socks, and just went for it!
It felt soooo good!
That’s the first time I encountered ‘earthing’, or ‘grounding’.
The basic concept of it as explained on the Earthing.com website is:
The earth’s surface has a virtually limitless supply of mobile electrons that gives the ground we walk on (as well as lakes and oceans) a natural negative electric charge. When you touch your body to the ground, it dissipates static electricity and extraneous environmental electrical charges that are on you. At the same time, you receive a charge of energy in the form of free electrons and your body synchronizes with the natural frequencies of the earth.
Studies show that just 30 minutes of grounding barefoot outside on a conductive surface everyday, is sufficient to feel the benefits of this amazing free resource and reverse many issues that the modern population faces. And I have to say, it has changed my life and my husbands too.
This was the start of an exploratory adventure for me when I started reading about grounding and EMFs (Electro Magnetic Frequencies). EMFs are emitted by most electronic devices and not just from the obvious places like your laptop, monitor, phone, tablet, tv, microwave, etc. But also from other appliances and infrastructure that, usually, no one pays attention to… wifi, plug in bug repellent, 5G towers, power lines, or even your bedside lamp and alarm clock. In a word, they are everywhere.
I’ve noticed that I have a very sensitive disposition to EMFs, especially since I consciously unplugged from them during the Covid pandemic. And so when I’m at home, I hardly have any devices around me, and feel great. Last year I spent one night in a hotel and I actually felt wired. It was one of those rooms where the beside remote controls everything including the colour of the shower (why would one even need this feature?).
Also, I went to an electric car showroom when we were on the hunt for our next car, and I only sat inside a demo car for a few minutes before feeling physically sick and like I was being fried from the inside. The showroom attendant showed zero sympathy and gave me the look of ‘I think you’re a crazy person!’ - surprise surprise, we left with no car.
Yet, there is a lot of debate out there about the impact of EMFs, simply because there hasn’t been enough research done into this topic. Much like people used to think smoking was good for you. I predict that in 50 years or so, EMFs will also be proven to show that they can be harmful to our health.
I recommend everyone to do their own research into this. You can buy devices that measure the amount of EMFs in the environment, like this one that I have from Envirosens:
And you can use a basic multi-meter (see below) to measure the voltage that runs through your body when you are sitting next to all your devices, and then watch how your body voltage drops the minute you step onto an indoor grounding mat, or stand barefoot in the garden. Try it for yourself!
We’ve been sleeping grounded for over 4 years now, and I regularly practice barefoot walking in the garden. The level of energy and focus that we have experienced because of it has exponentially increased. Two perfect ingredients to get more done, especially with young ones around.
Another good test, if you have any pets, is to buy a grounding mat and watch them curl up on it. Why are they doing that? Why that spot? Because it feels so good.
Once you get past the tingling sensations (you’ll feel these almost immediately when you are grounded), you just notice yourself feeling different. Have a headache? Go grounding. Feeling aches and pains? Go grounding. Studies that have been done, show amazing results in all sorts of areas like chronic fatigue, high blood pressure, inflammation, arthritis, amongst many others.

Don’t be fooled into spending lots of money though. Even with the grounding sheets and mats that we have, the best experience for me has always been to stand / sit outside barefoot and that is completely free.
Have you noticed yourself feeling different when you go back into the workplace?
