The Astonishing Results Meditating Everyday for 2 Years Gets You
And the key lessons I’ve learned along the way
Today marks my 734th consecutive day of meditation.
In the last two years, I've manifested amazing health opportunities, my ideal home, a healthy baby and hundreds of thousands of pounds.
I owe it all to meditation.
These days, meditation is more acceptable to talk about.
When I first started dabbling in it, over 20 years ago, it was still seen as ‘woo woo’ and only 'what the crazies do'.
But after a particularly stressful period of my life, I decided to give it one last go.
I started off with five minutes a day. It was hard, but for seven days I did it.
I felt a mild sense of achievement. I had sat still and quiet for five whole minutes.
But, I wasn't getting anything from this practice.
Experienced meditators told me to spend 15-20 minutes in this state, each day, for it to impact my life positively.
At the start, that felt like a really long time.
There are so many benefits to meditating.
Here are just a few:
greater sense of calmness
greater clarity
better focus
improved concentration
reduced anxiety and depression
better pain management
and many more..
Here are some science based studies on it, in case you’re that way inclined.
It works best when you’re comfortable.
I prefer to meditate by sitting quietly and comfortably, where I won't be disturbed.
I set a timer and listen to the steady boring hum of white noise (I have an app that sounds like a fan).
My intention is to sit and listen to the sound.
Every time my mind wanders, I refocus it back to the sound.
Imagine the journey for astronauts as they blast off into space. They hurtle towards the Earth's atmosphere.
It must be very bumpy, jumpy, and disorienting. This is how my mind feels at the start of a meditation.
Then, as the astronauts break through the Earth's atmosphere into space, everything is calm, quiet, and still.
I experience this as numbness. I can't tell where my hands are. My head sometimes sways on its own. Occasionally, I see swirling coloured patterns behind my eyes.
These are all distractions, like the thoughts. But, when I hit this stage, I know the thoughts won't return for a few seconds. It feels wonderful.
In a 15-minute meditation, it may take 13 or 14 minutes to get to this state.
This feeling of total oneness and blankness is addictive. It keeps me coming back every day.
I pay more attention to the thoughts that follow, as they remain untainted by a busy mind.
These powerful thoughts are like messages from my intuition.
And no, they’re not these solemn ‘save the world’ type thoughts you might expect to get after meditating. There are no harps playing in the background.
Sometimes they can be as mundane as ‘search for your Rubik’s cube’ or ‘call X and tell them about a spa they should visit’. Random, yes; profound, no.
As a regular meditator, I now get these thoughts throughout the day, not just at the end of a meditation.
Curious to try it?
Through this journey, I've discovered seven key insights that might help you with meditating:
When you quieten your mind regularly like this, you can hear your intuition more clearly. Some people call this a 'gut feeling'. Your intuition always has your best interests at heart. So, when that random thought comes to you after a quiet mind, act on it and you won’t be disappointed.
Timing is everything. When your intuition tells you to do something right now, do it right now. Don’t wait until tomorrow. To accept divine timing is to accept that a number of things are being orchestrated at once. Only your intuition knows what they are. So, when it says to do it now, it’s because the components you need are lining up to deliver what you've asked for.
Meditate in the morning before your mind gets busy and you’ve read too many emails. It’s much easier to quieten your mind first thing before it gets busy with life stuff.
After the first few days of meditating, you might find that your life feels like chaos. This would seem strange as you’d expect it to feel smooth. But what’s happening is that you’re shifting from one frequency to another. When this happens, unwanted things tend to shuffle around. They make room for what you do want. It can all feel a bit chaotic at first.
You’ll feel more ready for everything. Ready for the day; ready for the people you’ll meet; the chance encounters you’ll come across and the unusual events that might occur. You’ll feel more able to cope and handle whatever your day dishes out. This one for me has been the most powerful benefit, and it’s more noticeable by the day.
If you find yourself dozing off, then use the time to sleep instead. You need to be awake for a meditation to work, and you might as well use the time to rest if you need it. You can always meditate later when you’re more awake.
The more you practice, the easier it gets. Don't give up if, after 7 days, you're still battling with millions of thoughts. Meditation is progressive. But, even after 734 days, I still have times where I struggle to get to the ‘blank space’. Accept that it will come when you’re ready, be kind to yourself and don’t rush it.
So, if you’re wondering whether or not you should try meditating, here’s your sign to give it a go.
It needs no special tools or practice, just commitment.
Be consistent, even if it feels like nothing is happening.
The last two years have been a positive whirlwind, and I can’t attribute it to anything else but my consistent meditation practice.
Give it a go - you never know what kind of power you might unlock within yourself.
If you need a buddy to chat it through with, feel free to get in touch.
Here's to another 365 days.
Namaste.
